Interactive patient summary

In recent years, the increasing significance of digitalization has also made itself felt in the healthcare sector. Digitalization offers new ways to optimize business processes at the organizational level and to use artificial intelligence to make the work of doctors and healthcare professionals simpler and more efficient – to enhance, but by no means “replace,” the human factor.

While the area of the documentation that needs to be reviewed and considered is constantly evolving and improving, the expectations of patients are also increasing. They expect the attending physician to be familiar with all existing relevant documents and records. In order to meet patient expectations in this regard, there is a real need for effective solutions that provide information quickly.

The lack of transparency is repeatedly criticized, particularly when Austria’s ELGA (electronic health record) is used to access physician’s letters and findings from other hospitals. Similarly, the absence of a search function that can be used to retrieve specific information has impeded acceptance on a broader scale.

The solution: an Medical Cockpit provides an interactive overview of all external (ELGA) and internal (HIS) documents with an intelligent full text search function. Based on technologies that are already established in the field of enterprise search, it is possible to pinpoint and retrieve information relevant to a particular clinical case from enormous amounts of data (millions of documents). The process goes beyond simply performing a traditional full-text search, employing semantic methods to find and display similar terms. This is made possible by integrating various diagnosis, service, and medication catalogs, as well as synonym lists, jargon terms, and in-house catalogs.

With an intuitive, well structured compilation of the most valuable information, such as diagnoses, therapies, and medications, doctors can quickly gain an overview of the patient’s entire “career history” (patient summary). Using the filter and search functions, hundreds of documents can also be narrowed down to those that are of interest for the specific case.

This provides both physicians and nursing staff with a user-friendly tool that – in keeping with the high demands on modern IT systems – delivers information quickly and conveniently.  That means that valuable time can be devoted to patients rather than searching for medical records in the basement archive.
